What Is General Synod?
Synod? What does that mean? Speaking literally, it's a 14th-century Greek-rooted word, and it refers to the government of a church.
For us, it's the annual meeting of representatives from all over the denomination who gather to make decisions that affect church life. This group of representatives is called the General Synod of the RCA.
The General Synod has authority in all matters that relate to denominational programs and policies. Its representatives are elders and ministers of Word and sacrament from all of the RCA's forty-six classes. ("Classes" is the plural of "classis".)
General Synod delegates vote on recommendations that various RCA program agencies, commissions, committees, and task forces have sent to the synod. They also vote on overtures sent to synod by the classes and elect the vice president of synod, who typically is elected president the following year.
